Our perceptions around sex and sexuality have a profound impact on our lives, relationships, and overall well-being. In our modern, media-saturated culture, these perceptions have become increasingly skewed, leading to a host of issues ranging from pornography addiction to sexual fear and dysfunction. In a powerful new episode of the True Connections Recovery podcast, host Brigham Elton, a leading expert in pornography recovery and sexual addiction counseling, sits down with Andrea Rose, a mother of four, to unpack why our perceptions of sex matter so deeply - and how we can reclaim a godly, healthy perspective.

Shifting Away from a Distorted View: Brigham explains that in his practice, he sees a wide range of sexual issues, from pornography addiction to sexual abuse and infidelity. At the root of these struggles, he says, is a fundamental shift in how people view and approach sex. "Pornography has shifted us. It's in such a significant way that there is, like multiple studies like I can think of eight different studies that have shown that over 30% and somewhere between 30 and 50 right, and the recent ones I've seen are like 47% of men between the ages of 15 and 35 are struggling to get an erection to actual sex because their brain has been so skewed by pornography," Brigham shares. This constant exposure to the high-stimulation, novelty-driven world of pornography has warped people's perceptions, causing them to see sex as a means of personal gratification rather than a sacred, God-ordained act of intimacy and connection.

The Healing Power of a Godly Perspective But Brigham emphasizes that the path to healing lies in aligning our view of sex with God's design. "Because if we thought about sex in the way that God thought about sex, we would feel about sex in such a positive way that the sexual fear wouldn't stop us, and our sexual behaviors would start to mimic our God, right?" As Brigham and Andrea guide listeners through this process, they share powerful stories of individuals who have experienced profound transformation by embracing a godly perspective on sexuality. One client, for example, was able to overcome the appeal of pornography simply by recognizing the disconnect between the high-volume, impersonal nature of online content and the intimate, relational essence of true sexual intimacy.

Fostering Godly Sexuality in the Home Ultimately, Brigham and Andrea believe that the key to addressing the sexual struggles plaguing our culture lies in equipping the next generation with a solid, God-centered foundation. "What if we could start not from this place of decay, but start from this place of innocence in the child and, like, keep aiming them at God, like, intimacy from the beginning," Andrea notes. By intentionally cultivating a home environment that celebrates the beauty and sacredness of sexuality, parents can empower their children to navigate this critical area of life with wisdom, confidence, and a deep appreciation for God's design.
