Social distancing has forced a lot of people to stay home and spend their days and nights without a schedule. How can you maintain healthy relationships during this time of isolation?

After a few weeks of social distancing in the U.S. and quarantine in other parts of the world many people are feeling to toll that being so separate from our normal social lives can take. When hearing from family and friends they talk about when this will all end and how much they miss work, or the social aspect of their workplace.

“Pornography consumption has increased since social distancing by up to 60% in some countries.”

Social Distancing can be a Great Opportunity to Connect

Staying home can have some great benefits too. We get to spend time with the people that mean the most to us. There are so many great ways to connect with the people around you.

Play a board game, complete a puzzle, draw or do something creative, talk to a family member, build a fort with your kids, have a picnic in your living room, start a movie marathon. These are some face to face interactions that can really build connection and taking advantage of the time you have right now can help strengthen relationships. When we are building healthy relationships is it harder for us to develop bad habits of disconnection.

Technology can be a great way to connect with others at this time. Play video games online with extended family, group video call members of your family or friends to chat. There are so many resources that we have to connect in healthy ways through technology. Pornography consumption has increased significantly in the last few weeks according to porn hub statistics that are released almost weekly.

For some it might be hard to connect with other individuals at this time and so in seeking connection they turn to pornography. This fake connection will not satisfy the need we have as humans to connect with others and feel a sense of belonging. Seek to connect with real people, even if it is through a screen, call a family member, play a game. Do something productive to keep your connections alive with those you can't see in person. Turning to pornography might bring momentary relief but in the long run, who knows how long this social distancing will last and going back to something fake will not bring connection or happiness. The joy we feel from real connection is far greater and long lasting than the momentary pleasure we might feel during pornography use. Reach out to those you think might feel alone and be their connection.

Take this time to connect. Be creative and find ways to build healthy relationships.

What are you doing to connect with others?
